D.A.R.E. South Hampton
D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistant Education and I feel it is an important tool for teaching kids to make the right decisions. Dare is a program that makes students think about self respect, alternatives to peer pressure and making good choices. I have always felt that if DARE taught one student to make the right decision and saved one life than it was worth it. As Chief in West Newbury I promoted DARE in the elementary, Middle and High School. I know it works because one student came back from a ski trip to Bradford and told me he was offered a joint by a student from another school. He told a teacher and that other student was later arrested. That student made the right choice, did the right thing and resisted peer pressure.
In South Hampton, because of the small staff , I asked the New Hampshire State Police to step in and assist us with qualified DARE instructors. Cpl. Maureen Stern put together a program last year and has continued it this year with Trp. Richard Perreault. I thank them for their help and hope in the future we can get an officer from South Hampton through the DARE instructor school. Below is a brief description of the DARE program. Thank You. Chief Jonathon Dennis
D.A.R.E. teaches kids how to recognize and resist the direct and subtle pressures that influence them to experiment with alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and other drugs. And since between 70% and 90% of all crime is drug related, it is absolutely vital that we reach the children of America before it is too late.
The D.A.R.E. program is usually introduced to children in the 5th or 6th grade. A specially trained officer comes into your school and teaches the children. D.A.R.E. has launched a new elementary and a new middle school curriculum this year.
