Burglary Update

Working in conjunction with the Salisbury, Amesbury, Kensington and Seabrook Police, the South Hampton Police have arrested 4 people involved in the house breaks which occurred on Highland Ave and Jewell St.. Currently they are in jail as we await the joint prosecution of all involved. The burglary ring which was involved in more than 40 house breaks which spread from Haverhill to Amesbury and the Seacoast area as far north Northwood has been identified and eight more people have been charged or will be charged in connection with the burglaries. As a result of this joint investigation the DEA, ATF and now the Secret Service have become involved as we track the stolen merchandise, guns and counterfeit money that was used to purchase heroin.

In South Hampton, this group was responsible not only for the two recent housebreaks, but for the one on Whitehall Rd. last year and the theft of a snow blower and tools from Main Ave. Unfortunately, items taken in the breaks were immediately disposed of for cash to purchase drugs.

We are pleased that this cooperative effort was able to put an end to the house breaks that affected our area. However, times are tough and drug users become desperate during this time of year. It is important that residents remain vigilant and keep doors and vehicles locked. Report any unusual activity to the police and take extra precautions to leave outside lights on at night, alarms on if you have them and watch out for your neighbors.

The South Hampton Police Department will be sponsoring a solicitation by-law for the next annual Town meeting to limit the door-to-door solicitation by subjects casing residences for break-ins or thefts. Again, please do not hesitate to call if you see anything unusual. We would rather investigate 100 false calls than one break-in. Thank You.

P.S. After writing this update, Newton has experienced a rash of housebreaks on the Plaistow side of Town. A suspect from Haverhill was arrested with stolen computers. Another suspect was also arrested in a housebreak on the Kingston-Newton Line. So, it is important to be vigilant as drug addiction and the economy drive these criminals to desperation. Please keep your doors locked, your vehicles locked and call in any suspicious activity.
